The golden gate saloon
Dust Off Your Boots and Sit a Spell
The Golden Gate Saloon is known as the oldest continuously operating saloon west of the Mississippi. As legend has it, not even Prohibition could keep the good times and spirits from flowing in our bar. Stephen and Clara Smith were among the first to invest in this boomtown known today as Grass Valley. They built the Golden Gate Saloon which sadly, was destroyed by a fire in 1855 along with most of Grass Valley. The Smiths rebuilt the popular saloon as a one story fieldstone building with a brick façade, making it safer from the threat of another fire.
